Working with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was the closest I got to god.

There are great singers, and then there are those few voices that transcend time. The late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan could not only transcend time, but also language and religion. There was magic when he opened his mouth, a sense of holy ecstasy that was exciting and emotional. It wasn't uncommon even for Western listeners, who didn't understand a word he was singing or follow his Sufi traditions, to be moved to tears upon hearing him.

This is about Nusrat's show in London. I had invited Mick Jagger to the show and he said he could spare five minutes for it, as he was very busy. I told Nusrat about it and said to him, "If Mick Jagger does come, he should not go before the concert is over." And that is what happened. Mick Jagger came and stayed for three hours and lis tened to Nusrat's qawwali.This proves his greatness, and for this Nusrat has worked very hard. He has held many shows for my hospital project and it is because of the Nusrat shows that I have been able to collect funds for the project in European and American cities. Nusrat did all those shows free. He is truly a great artist.

Nusrat's voice has such strength and depth that anybody who runs in to it can overcome any cultural or linguistic barrie.

You will be glad to hear that Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan has received the nomination (among other 8 poets) for the "Nosside" International Poetry Awards 1992" which takes place in Rome every year in December.The reason why Nusrat has received the nomination is because he has been considered a musician with a tremendous sensibility and is able to conjugate the tradition of his own country and the muscial harmonic structures of its music with the western world contemporary music.Other nominations were given to the famous poet Rafael Alberti from Spain, Italian song writer Fabbrizio de Andre, Sardinia Group Tazenda, French film maker Michel Deville, Italian poets Tonina Guerra and Andrea Zanzotto and few others.

Richard Henderson recently sent me a chapter of a book called Shadow Dancing in the U.S.A. by Michael Ventura, to read on the plane to New Orleans.The chapter is called Hear That Long Snake Moan. It's about the origins of rock and roll being found in the Voodoo ceremonies that were only allowed in New Orleans.Ventura frequently claims that an essential component of American music is the African concept that the physical and spiritual worlds are not separated but intersect. Heaven is not above with the earth below, and the trance experienced by intense dancing is a visit to the world of the spirit.I think much of what he says about the blues, gospel, soul, and rock and roll, applies to the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Nusrat somehow reaches listeners on an emotional and spiritual level that seems to be universal.In his voice I find a kind of direct communication that seldom fails to move me deeply.

Nusrat is one of the greatest singers of our time. When his singing takes off, his voice embodies soulfullness and spirituality like no other. It has been an honour for me to work with him.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan would say that I have the got the fortune and reputation by going on foot to "Dargahs" (Shrines) , and the Qawalis were sung only at the “Dargahs” and now the whole world is fascinated by the singing of the Qawwalis and it is possessed of only those names, which I have chanted throughout my whole life by way of my supplication and prayer.

ਨੁਸਰਤ ਫਤਿਹ ਅਲੀ ਖਾਨ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਸੀ  ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਰੂਜ਼ ਅਤੇ ਸ਼ਾਹੋਰਤ ''ਦਰਗਾਹਾਂ'' ਅਤੇ ਮਝਹਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਜਾ-ਜਾ ਮਿਲੀ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸਿਰਫ ''ਦਰਗਾਹਾਂ'' ਅਤੇ "ਮਝਹਾਰਾਂ" ਤੇ ਜੋ ਕਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਗਾਈਆਂ ਜਾਂਦੀਆਂ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਸਾਰਾ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਦੀਵਾਨੀ ਹੈ । ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੀਵਾਨੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਪੁਕਾਰ-ਪੁਕਾਰ ਕਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।  
 

When I sing for God, I feel myself in accord with God, and the house of God, Mecca, is right in front of me. And I worship. When I sing for Mohammed, peace be upon him, our prophet, I feel like I am sitting right next to his tomb, Medina, and paying him respect and admitting to myself that I accept his message.

जब मैं भगवान के लिए गाता हूं, तो मैं खुद को भगवान के अनुरूप महसूस करता हूं, और भगवान का घर, मक्का, मेरे सामने सही है। और मैं पूजा करता हूं। जब मैं मोहम्मद के लिए गाता हूं, तो शांति उस पर, हमारे नबी पर, मुझे ऐसा लगता है कि मैं उसकी कब्र, मदीना के ठीक बगल में बैठा हूं, और उसे सम्मान दे रहा हूं और खुद को स्वीकार कर रहा हूं कि मैं उसके संदेश को स्वीकार करता हूं।

ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਰੱਬ ਲਈ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਰੱਬ ਦੇ ਰੰਗ ਵਿਚ ਢਲਿਆ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਘਰ, ਮੱਕਾ, ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ. ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਇਬਾਦਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ. ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਲਈ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਦੀ ਦੁਆ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ, ਸਾਡੇ ਨਬੀ, ਮੈਂ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਮਕਬਰੇ ਮਦੀਨਾ ਦੇ ਬਿਲਕੁਲ ਕੋਲ ਬੈਠਾ ਹਾਂ, ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦਾ ਆਦਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ

People say that love is easy, but love spares nothing and no-one

लोग कहते हैं कि प्यार करना आसान है, लेकिन प्यार किसी व्यक्ति को माफ नहीं करता है

ਲੋਕ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਕਿ ਪਿਆਰ ਅਸਾਨ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਪਿਆਰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵਸਤੂ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਖਸ਼ਦਾ

To be a qawwal is more than being a performer, more than being an artist. One must be willing to release one's mind and soul from one's body to achieve ecstasy through music. Qawwali is enlightenment itself.

कव्वाल बनने के लिए कलाकार होने से ज्यादा, कलाकार होने से ज्यादा है। संगीत के माध्यम से परमानंद प्राप्त करने के लिए किसी के शरीर से किसी के मन और आत्मा को छोड़ने के लिए तैयार होना चाहिए। कव्वाली ही आत्मज्ञान है।

ਇਕ ਕਵਾਲ ਬਣਨਾ ਇਕ ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਬਣਨ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਹੈ. ਇਕ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਰੂਹ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਰੀਰ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਛੁਟਕਾਰਾ ਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪਰਮ ਆਨੰਦ ਮਾਨ ਸਕੇ,  ਕਵਾਲੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ ਹੈ.

It is not necessary that the scion of a singing family, even if he sings, can excel in it. In order to reach his peak he has to work very, very hard.

यह आवश्यक नहीं है कि एक गायन परिवार का वंशज, भले ही वह गाता हो, उसमें उत्कृष्टता प्राप्त कर सकता है। अपने मुकाम तक पहुंचने के लिए उसे बहुत मेहनत करनी पड़ती है।

ਇਹ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਕ ਗਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦਾ ਮੇਂਬਰ , ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਤਮ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ. ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿਖਰ 'ਤੇ ਪਹੁੰਚਣ ਲਈ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ, ਬਹੁਤ ਸਖਤ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਨੀ ਪੈਣੀ ਹੈ 

A performer learns with experience and with age. I did not know the future when I left home and started out to begin my career: I started qawaali; then I met Peter Gabriel and was exposed to a lot of new ideas.

I like to experiment with my voice, besides music.

In my opinion, being an all-rounder is good. It is not right that I should be content with qawwali and ignore other forms, since I am basically trained in classical singing. We should be masters of all forms of singing.

मेरी राय में, ऑलराउंडर होना अच्छा है। यह सही नहीं है कि मुझे कव्वाली से संतुष्ट होना चाहिए और अन्य रूपों की उपेक्षा करनी चाहिए, क्योंकि मैं मूल रूप से शास्त्रीय गायन में प्रशिक्षित हूं। हमें गायन के सभी रूपों में महारत हासिल होनी चाहिए

You've got to sing from the depths of the heart. Without heart, you cannot be a Qawwal.

From childhood, I had been instructed in the tabla by my father, along with the antaraas specific to our Gharana.

मुझे बचपन से ही मेरे पिता द्वारा तबला सिखाया जाता है, और हमारे परिवार की पेचीदगियों को सिखाया जाता है।

ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤਬਲੇ ਦੀ ਸਿਖਲਾਈ ਦਿਤੀ ਗਈ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਘਰਾਣੇ ਨਾਲ ਸੰਬਧਿਤ ਅੰਤਰੇ ਸਿਖਾਏ ਗਏ ਹਨ। 

My father gave me formal education in raagdari. He died in Lahore in 1964 when I was 13. I was in the tenth year of school, and my father's brother took me into the qawwali ensemble and started giving me formal education in qawwali.

मेरे पिता ने मुझे रागदारी में औपचारिक शिक्षा दी। 1964 में जब मैं 13 साल का था तब उनकी लाहौर में मृत्यु हो गई थी। मैं स्कूल के दसवें वर्ष में था, और मेरे चाचा जी  मुझे कव्वाली प्रोग्राम में ले लिया और मुझे कव्वाली में औपचारिक शिक्षा देना शुरू कर दिया।

ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਜੀ ਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰਾਗਦਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਸਮੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦਿੱਤੀ. ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮੌਤ 1964 ਵਿਚ ਲਾਹੌਰ ਵਿਚ ਹੋਈ ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ 13 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਸੀ। ਮੈਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਦੇ ਦਸਵੇਂ ਸਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ chacha ji ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਾਵਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਵਿਚ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਵਾਲੀ ਵਿਚ ਰਸਮੀ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੇਣਾ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕਰ  ਦਿਤੀ ।

There should be change - the West should understand our music and culture, and vice versa. With such collaboration, artist can come closer to each other and come to know each other.

परिवर्तन होना चाहिए - पश्चिम को हमारे संगीत और संस्कृति को समझना चाहिए, और इसके विपरीत। इस तरह के सहयोग से कलाकार एक दूसरे के करीब आ सकते हैं और एक दूसरे को जान सकते हैं

ਤਬਦੀਲੀ ਹੋਣੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ - ਪੱਛਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਡੇ ਸੰਗੀਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਨਾਲ, ਕਲਾਕਾਰ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਦੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਆ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ

People listened to Farsi texts, and to the great texts of our Baba Bulleh Shah, Khwaja Ghulam Farid, Mian Muhammad Bakhsh Julm. People do listen to it these days, but much less than in those days.

ਲੋਕਾਂ  ਫਾਰਸੀ, ਅਤੇ ਬਾਬਾ ਬੁੱਲ੍ਹੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ, ਖਵਾਜਾ ਗੁਲਾਮ ਫਰੀਦ, ਮੀਆਂ ਮੁਹੰਮਦ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼ ਜੂਮ ਦੇ ਮਹਾਨ ਪਾਠ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ।  ਲੋਕ ਅੱਜ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਇਸ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਿਨਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਘੱਟ ਸੁਣਦੇ ਹਨ।  

There is a famous musician, Peter Gabriel, who has used my voice in the movie, 'The Last Temptation of Christ.' He used my song in the background.
